An effective meeting starts with the right people in the room and keeps things focused once they’re in. Today, we’re launching two new features in Proton Meet to empower teams with productive video conferences.
Waiting rooms give hosts more control over who joins, and chat threads keep in-meeting conversations organized. Both features are now live and protected by the same end-to-end encryption that underpins every Proton Meet call.
Waiting rooms: Decide who joins, and when
Proton Meet already keeps your calls end-to-end encrypted, but privacy also depends on who has access to the conversation. With waiting rooms, everyone except the host waits to be admitted.
Every Meet call is private by design and uses Messaging Layer Security (MLS), an open source end-to-end encryption protocol. Users in the waiting room aren’t part of the MLS group and won’t have access to any of the meeting content. They receive access only when the host admits them, so sensitive discussions stay limited to the right people. Participant names are also end-to-end encrypted and decrypted on the host’s device, so our servers can’t see who is waiting.
Waiting rooms are available now on all Proton Meet paid plans, including Meet Professional, all Workspace plans, and the Meet add-on. If you have a free plan, you can upgrade for access.
Chat threads: Keep every conversation easy to follow
In-meeting chat is where team members raise questions, provide answers, and confirm next steps. In a busy call, messages and replies often stack up out of order, making it hard to tell if something has already been addressed and what the response was.
Chat threads let you reply directly to any message so each discussion stays contained without disrupting the wider chat. And they follow the same privacy standard as the rest of Meet. Messages, replies, and reactions are all end-to-end encrypted, including the thread structure, so Proton’s servers can’t see which messages are replies and what they reply to. Chat exists only for the duration of the call with no server-side history, and disappears once the meeting ends for utmost confidentiality. Each message sender’s identity is also verified through their authenticated meeting credentials to help prevent impersonation.
Chat threads are available now to all Meet users, on both free and paid plans.
Bring more control to your next meeting
Waiting rooms and chat threads make Proton Meet even better suited for the way businesses meet online: Greater control over who joins and better ways to communicate once they do. Alongside these features, this release also includes general performance and stability improvements, so Meet is smoother and more reliable than ever. Every Meet call and chat is protected with end-to-end encryption that ensures no one outside of that meeting, not even Proton, has access to its contents.
